internet reveals photographs of Nixon playing with Checkers.Checkers was born in unremarkable circumstances. Regardless of
Checkers' notoriety, Cocker Spaniels are a popular breed - in the United Kingdom it is
ranked second in popularity, after the Labrador Retriever.Cocker Spaniels are relatively easy to train as
they are eager to please - they are a good choice for the novice dog
owner. In a stroke of political genius, Nixon tugged at the heartstrings of over sixty
million American viewers by adding "the kids, like all kids, love the dog and I
just want to say this right now, that regardless of what they say about it,
we are going to keep him." This address by Nixon would become known as "the
Checkers speech".At the time of the speech, Checkers was relatively new to the Nixon household
as the puppy had been presented to the Nixons in August 1952. And probably would
have led an unremarkable life were it not for her foray into the White House.
